We can't let Liverpool triumph go to waste, says Atalanta coach

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini says his side have to make the most of their Europa League semi-final first leg at Marseille after knocking out heavyweights :iverpool in the last round.

The club from the small Italian city of Bergamo have been punching above their weight for years and are in a first ever European semi-final.

Atalanta are sixth in Serie A as they target Champions League qualification, with Italy set to gain an extra place for next term's revamped competition. They are also in the Italian Cup final against Juventus on May 15, when they want to repeat their 1963 triumph.

But the Europa League is most important for the coach.

"The game requires courage and quality because beating Liverpool counts for little now," he told a news conference on Wednesday.

"We might have a bit more credibility having beaten the favourites but we have to show it again on the pitch. This competition is now our priority."

The Italians take on the French at the Stade Velodrome, with the return leg at home next Thursday.

"Our season up to now has been extraordinary and we deserve to be playing in a semi-final, but Marseille deserve it too," Gasperini added.

"This away leg is more important than the home one because it will decide how the second leg plays out."

Marseille boss Jean-Louis Gasset, whoe side are seventh in Ligue 1, is pinning his hopes on former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

"I think he's the top scorer in the competition, that speaks for itself. Ever since I arrived, he's been the player who's made the difference for us, he's an outstanding player," he said.

"I've heard people talk about his age (34), but I don't believe it's an issue, he's 20 in his mind, he's a professional and a beautiful person."
