Why Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney must invest in one key position at Wrexham again this summer - opinion

Wrexham supporters are excited about the summer ahead as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds prepare to invest in Phil Parkinson’s squad.

Wrexham’s ambitious owners have their sights set on reaching the Championship, with Ryan Reynolds claiming he will do whatever it takes to get promoted.

Those comments have got fans anticipating the window ahead and the prospect of their Hollywood owners splashing the cash.

The Reds will only battle for promotion if significant investment in the squad is made, especially with several players poised to depart.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo remains a priority signing for Phil Parkinson’s squad while links to strikers Benji Magee and Macaulay Langstaff suggest there is one position Wrexham will be looking to strengthen most.

Phil Parkinson needs to invest in firepower for Wrexham

Wrexham’s squad is currently bloated with strikers. Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher, Sam Dalby, Jack Marriott, Ollie Palmer and the returning Jake Bickerstaff are his options to the lead the line.

Realistically, the Reds will be looking to offload Bickerstaff and Dalby while Fletcher’s contract expires this summer, leaving just Mullin, Palmer and Marriott.

There are question marks over whether the latter two can perform to the level required, which suggests investing in a striker is necessary.

Wrexham ranked third in League Two for goals scored, with only Mansfield and Stockport beating their tally of 89 goals.

But stepping up to the third tier will need Parkinson craving added firepower, as the Reds should find quality chances harder to come by, so a ruthless finisher will be needed.

There are plenty who Wrexham could go for in the window, especially if they’re eyeing up a bargain for free.

Which strikers could Wrexham sign?

The only strikers Wrexham have been linked with so far are Magee and Langstaff, but both of those players would cost sizeable fees, whereas other individuals are available on a free transfer.

League One goal-machine Jonson Clarke-Harris sees his contract expire in the summer, as does Ipswich Town striker Kayden Jackson, who would make a return to Wrexham if he was snapped up on a free.

These are the type of forwards Parkinson should be targeting; ones who are proven goal scorers in the third tier and are approaching the prime years of their career.

Currently, you’d only be confident about Mullin being a reliable taker of chances next season, even if he did only score three in 20 for Tranmere on his last time at this level.

Mullin is desperately craving a consistent strike partner this summer, which would allow Wrexham to take League One by storm.
