Exclusive: Tottenham still tipped to sign ‘special’ player this summer despite interest from Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur are still tipped to land one of the hottest free agents this summer despite interest coming from Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side are now pushing to secure themselves a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Any hope of a top four finish all but vanished on the weekend after North London Derby defeat saw Tottenham remain seven points adrift of Aston Villa.

With any form of European qualification will come the requirement for Spurs to enter the 2024/25 campaign which a strong squad full of depth.

Postecoglou has already admitted that centre-back will be an area which the club will look into addressing over the coming months.

Although Radu Dragusin was added in January, the Lilywhites have seen Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier depart over the last 12 months.

With a fourth-choice centre-back on the radar for Spurs this summer, Graeme Bailey of HITC Football has exclusively spoken to The Spurs News about one particular target.

Tottenham tipped to beat interest from Newcastle for centre-back

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have formed one of the Premier League’s best defensive partnerships this season under Postecoglou.

And the addition of Dragusin now means Spurs are on the eye out for a new fourth-choice centre-back over the summer.

One player who the club are said to have held a long standing interest in is Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham.

The 26-year-old will now become a free agent in the summer after rejecting the improved offers put to him by Fulham.

It is apparent his current manager Marco Silva does not want to lose the defender having labeled him as “special” earlier in the season.

And now, Bailey has told The Spurs News that he expects the Englishman to land at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the coming months.

“My opinion, I think he ends up at Tottenham. He’s got the right agents who are connected to Spurs and Tottenham have been in for him for a while,” he said.

“Newcastle like him a lot too, that is true and they are both keen on Tosin and Lloyd Kelly and we could see them both end up at the same club, but as it stands I think Tosin is more likely to Spurs and Kelly to Newcastle.”

Interesting stat that shows Tosin Adarabioyo could solve major Tottenham weakness

Over the 2023/24 campaign, it has become apparent that Tottenham hold a real weakness when it comes to defending set pieces.

In Sunday’s North London Derby, Tottenham conceded twice from corners inside the first half alone and were also exposed in their game prior against Newcastle United.

There is a lot that can be done on the coaching side of the issue, but Tosin could offer Spurs with a real aerial presence from set pieces.

Here is a summary of how he stacks up against the current Spurs centre-backs in aerial duels.

Although these stats do not specifically focus on set piece defending, standing at a 1.96m, Tosin would surely provide Tottenham with a player capable of dealing with corners.
