Jermain Defoe says Tottenham sold a player for just £750k who’s now become ‘amazing’ since leaving

Tottenham Hotspur coach Jermain Defoe has now admitted there is a player who Spurs sold for just £750k.

Over the last few years there has been some questionable transfer decisions made at Tottenham.

However, those decisions have now become much less frequent with the club learning from signings like Tanguy Ndombele.

The transfer business done at Tottenham over the last 12 months has been much improved with the club bringing in some serious players.

Ange Postecoglou has seen the likes of Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario drastically improve the level of the starting XI.

And signings like these have seen much needed progression on the pitch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

But it is apparent that the Spurs legend feels the club may have let a serious talent get away from Hotspur Way over recent years.

Jermain Defoe feels Spurs may have passed on a really impressive player by selling him

The Spurs U18s coach has already admitted that he would be willing to leave the club where he scored so many goals if a certain job came up.

Defoe is keen to make the leap into management having earned his coaching badges and it’s clear he has some big aspirations.

The Spurs striker became a coach in the Spurs academy set up earlier this season but he is already eyeing the job as the next Sunderland manager.

And there is one player currently playing at the Black Cats who has impressed massively this season.

Spurs sold Jack Clarke to the Wearside club back in 2022 for a fee believed to be in the region of 750k.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Defoe has admitted just how impressed he has been with the 23-year-old winger at the Stadium of Light.

““At the end of the day, he’s someone who I knew about from when he was at Leeds and he comes to Tottenham and he’s a 1v1 specialist. He’s one of those players that you don’t have to coach. You coach him by giving him the ball and letting him express himself and do what he does,” Defoe said.

“You can’t really coach players like that. If the club can hold on to him, he’ll be amazing. I think for any manager or young coach to work with players like that would obviously be a dream because when you’ve got good players, it makes your job easier.”

Tottenham could earn even more money of Jack Clarke this summer

In the interview with the local outlet, Defoe was speaking about how Clarke would not be on the move if he was to become the manager.

Sunderland have received a lot of interest in the winger over recent months and are expected to see clubs return for him this summer.

Statistics via Transfermarkt.

It was reported last summer that Sunderland rejected a £15m offer for the 23-year-old in January and are looking for £20+.

Where this concerns Spurs is because the Lilywhites are believed to hold a 25% sell-on clause after allowing Sunderland to sign Clarke for so little back in 2022.

Although this could only cough up around £5m for Spurs, it would be a nice little bonus to their profit and sustainability spreadsheet.
