Deion Sanders on his message to recruits: ‘I don’t sell anything because I don’t have anything to sell’

Deion Sanders continues to stay in the news this week for his social media activity, namely for calling out the ability (or apparent lack thereof) of some former Colorado players, all in defense of his son, Shedeur Sanders. And it’s a curious juxtaposition to what Sanders said about recruiting after the Buffaloes spring game on Saturday.

Asked about his messaging and approach to recruiting — Sanders infamously doesn’t hit the recruiting trail — Sanders was blunt about the expectations at Colorado. And he said that it’s going to be a blunt, straight forward environment.

“I don’t sell anything because I don’t have anything to sell,” Sanders said. “I don’t sell them dreams. I don’t sell them hope and sell them wishes. I tell them everything they get, they’re going to have to earn. I don’t promise you a number, I’m not promising you a position, I’m not promising you to start. If you want it, come and get it. We don’t sugar coat anything, we’re not big on baby you, we’re not going to hold your hand. You have 127 years of NFL experience up under this roof. It’s on you.”

As he continued, Sanders outlined a vision of a program where all the knowledge and resources necessary to develop from a high school prospect into an NFL draft pick are available and it’s incumbent on the players to use those resources to their maximum advantage.

“We are a tremendous navigational system to the game that you want to play,” Sanders said. “We know what we’re doing. We pretty much, we know how to get there because we’ve been there. Especially as a collective group. So it’s — sometimes the conversation gets repetitive and I don’t like that because it is what it is. If you want money, go to that department and talk about that, but I’m not the guy to talk about that. I want to talk football. So if it’s a business deal, that’s something else. I want you to come here for football. Now, once we get the football together, if the business works, let’s do it. But don’t come here for business and then the secondary thought process is football. I’m a football coach and I love the game.”

Sanders then finished his mini-spiel on recruiting with a message that hasn’t squared with his recent behavior online.

“Now, what separates me from everyone else — I feel good right now. What separates me from everyone else is I’ve sat in three seats. I gave you a dramatic pause so you could follow me. I’m the parent, right? Couple kids in college football. I’ve been a kid, right? I was a straight dog. Now I’m the coach. I know what the whole room is thinking. It’s a tremendous advantage, and I absolutely love it,” Sanders said.

“And we don’t talk about any other university, any other college, any other coach. That’s a rule here. We don’t put anybody down to come up.”
