‘He is a warrior’: Pape Matar Sarr says £42m Tottenham player is absolutely brilliant in training

Pape Matar Sarr has lauded one of his Tottenham Hotspur teammates ahead of tonight’s clash at Chelsea.

Tottenham will be aiming to avoid back-to-back London derby defeats following Sunday’s chaotic clash against Arsenal.

Ange Postecoglou’s men suffered a 3-2 loss at home to the Gunners after a poor defensive display in the first half.

Postecoglou opted for a midfield three of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison on the day. But the trio had all been replaced by the 64th minute, with Pape Matar Sarr introduced at halftime.

The 21-year-old performed well after his introduction and will be hoping to regain his place in the starting XI tonight.

One player who will certainly start from the off tonight is Cristian Romero. The Argentine was comfortably Tottenham’s best player in the North London Derby, netting their first goal of the game.

Sarr says Cristian Romero is brilliant in training

Postecoglou was full of praise for Romero following his display against Arsenal, claiming he needs the some of his players to be more like the World Cup winner.

Sarr agrees with his boss and lauded the Argentine’s mentality in a recent interview with Sky Sports.

“The coach is absolutely right,” he said. “Romero is a really hard worker. I often say he is a warrior. He’s a winner and he absolutely hates to lose.

“In terms of his mentality, out on the training pitch and in matches, it is always the same. That’s just how he is and he is certainly one of the leaders in the dressing room with the energy, commitment and determination that he brings to the team.

“It is something that helps us get across the line sometimes. When you look at the match against Arsenal, it’s not easy to put in that performance like he did in the second half. But he’s like that.

“He’s a winner and I’m really happy for what he brings to this team.”

Romero led by example vs Arsenal

With Tottenham trailing 3-0 in the North London Derby, Romero stepped up and almost took matters into his own hands.

At certain points, the 26-year-old was Spurs’ most advanced player and initiating their press from the front.

The £42 million man was rewarded with a goal in the 64th minute after a mistake from David Raya and he could have had a couple more on the day.

Much has been made of Romero’s disciplinary issues but barring the reverse fixture against Chelsea earlier this season, he’s been a reliable figure at the back for Postecoglou.
