'Nine years ago today...': PL club hails ex-Sheffield Wednesday star with hilarious social media post

Former Sheffield Wednesday star Atdhe Nuhiu has been hailed by a certain Premier League club.

Despite leaving Sheffield Wednesday four years ago now, Nuhiu is someone who fans still regularly discuss.

The Kosovan international joined in 2013 as a complete unknown, then after seven years at the club and 50 goals, he’d leave as a cult icon.

Nuhiu made 277 total appearances for the Owls with 27 assists complimenting his 50 goals.

The 2017/18 season was his most prolific for Wednesday, with 11 goals and five assists in 28 Championship appearances that season helping the Owls to finish in 15th.

Leaving as a free agent in 2020, the now 34-year-old has one season with APOEL in Cyprus before joining Austrian outfit Rheindorf Altach where he remains to this day.

He’s so far scored 20 and assisted seven in 92 appearances for Rheindorf.

Bournemouth call Atdhe Nuhiu the GOAT in hilarious social media post

Sheffield Wednesday fans have plenty of fond memories of Nuhiu, and it appears that Bournemouth do as well.

The Cherries took to X this morning, labelling former Sheffield Wednesday hero Nuhiu the GOAT following his goal in the 1-1 draw vs Watford on the final day of the 2014/15 season; nine years ago today.

Sheffield Wednesday drew with Watford on the final day to deny the Hornets the league title and hand it over to Bournemouth, who’ve been in the Premier League, barring two seasons back in the second tier, since.

Bournemouth posted:

Sheffield Wednesday cult heroes of this season

Although this season has been a largely very poor one, and although it could still end in relegation to League One, Sheffield Wednesday have unearthed a few cult icons like Nuhiu.

The January loan contingency Ike Ugbo, Ian Poveda, and James Beadle all fit that category.

Ugbo, like Nuhiu did in the past, has scored some vital goals for Sheffield Wednesday this season, whilst Poveda has provided that sark in attack, albeit missing several games due to injury.

And Beadle showed in the last outing vs West Brom why he’s been so valuable to the upturn in form, making several top class saves to keep the Baggies at bay.

Danny Rohl is of course the main one, though.

Without him, the chance of survival this season would never have been there, let alone so great going into the final day.

If he stays and Wednesday stay in the Championship, then they could yet unearth some more class players of old like Nuhiu in the transfer market this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday travel to Sunderland in their final game of the season this weekend.
