Parkinson must now snap up ‘dominant’ ace with 198 League One apps, he won't cost Wrexham a penny - opinion

Wrexham are set for an exciting summer following promotion to League One, and Phil Parkinson can snap up a ‘dominant’ player who wouldn’t cost a penny.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have set their sights on reaching the Championship.

The Hollywood superstars have flexed their ambition by claiming they’ll do whatever it takes to guide Wrexham into the second tier.

For Phil Parkinson’s men to have a successful transfer window, they’ll need to bolster several positions, including goalkeeper, centre-back, central midfield and centre-forward.

Wrexham have already been linked to strikers Benji Magee and Macaulay Langstaff while Humphrey Ker is ‘desperate’ to sign goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

Wrexham must strengthen at centre-back

Although Wrexham do need to find a strike partner for Paul Mullin, Parkinson faces a mass exodus of defenders departing the club.

Aaron Hayden, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe and Callum McFadzean are all poised to depart upon the expiry of their contracts, leaving just Tom O’Connor, Max Cleworth, Will Boyle and Eoghan O’Connell as realistic defensive options.

Parkinson did find the correct formula towards the end of the campaign, cultivating a defensive trio of Cleworth, O’Connor and O’Connell.

It’s a back line that would hold its own in League One, but Wrexham are still crying out for more experience, with Sean Raggett available on a free transfer.

Wrexham should snap up Sean Raggett

Long-serving defender Sean Raggett is one of 10 players who will leave League One champions Portsmouth this summer.

Raggett initially joined Pompey on a loan deal from Norwich in the summer of 2019, making that move permanent a year later. The rest, as they say, is history.

The 30-year-old defensive stalwart has become a fan favourite at Fratton Park, appearing 239 times for the club, including 38 in the third tier this season as John Mousinho’s men wrapped up the league title.

Described as “dominant” by EFL journalist Gabriel Sutton for his no-nonsense approach to defending, Raggett played a prominent role alongside the colossal Conor Shaughnessy, forming an excellent partnership.

Portsmouth fans will be sad to see him leave this summer as his team embark on their Championship campaign, but the towering centre-back shouldn’t be short of options, particularly from the third tier.

Wrexham should race to snap up Raggett on a free transfer and show their statement of intent by signing one of the league’s best defenders across the last few seasons.

He would not only bring experience having played 198 times in League One, but also a threat from set pieces, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists during his time at Pompey.

It’s this level of quality and experience that money can’t buy and fortunately, if the Reds were to snap him up, he wouldn’t cost the club a single penny.

He looks like the perfect player due to his dominance aerially and excellent leadership to take his place in the middle of a back three. Hopefully, that will be with Wrexham.
