‘I’m not convinced’: Journalist simply can’t imagine Adrian Newey joining one Red Bull rival in 2025

The news that Adrian Newey will be leaving Red Bull Racing is now confirmed after the genius designer submitted his resignation on Wednesday ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.

Red Bull have said that he will leave in the first quarter of 2025 which opens the door for him to join one of their rivals.

Speaking on The Race Podcast, journalist Edd Straw has been assessing the options on the table for Adrian Newey.

He’s likely to have plenty of suitors up and down the grid and just because a team isn’t currently running at the front of the grid, that might not be a deterrent to the 65-year-old.

Newey joined Red Bull when they were an emerging force and could easily take on another project like that again.

Straw admits he’s unconvinced that Newey will be joining Ferrari when he eventually leaves Red Bull.

Frederic Vasseur will be desperate to build the strongest team possible around Charles Leclerc and new recruit Lewis Hamilton.

They haven’t won a championship since 2008 and would love to end that run sooner rather than later.

Journalist unconvinced Adrian Newey will be joining Ferrari after Red Bull exit

At the moment, there appear to be two clear choices on the table for Adrian Newey.

Aston Martin have been throwing the cash around recently and securing Fernando Alonso to a new contract is a huge bonus.

Lawrence Stroll has reportedly offered Newey a crazy contract that will take some consideration.

However, an offer from Ferrari appears to be of serious consideration to Newey after decades of coming close to joining the team without taking the plunge.

Newey has supposedly already met with Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur, however, Straw is still unconvinced that the Tifosi will be his final destination.

It all hinges on whether a move to Italy appeals to Newey as the last time Ferrari employed a UK-based expert and they didn’t move to Maranello, it didn’t go to plan…

Adrian Newey will have a wealth of options to stay in Formula 1

Speaking about the 65-year-old’s future, Straw said: “I’ve always been sceptical about [Adrian] Newey going to Ferrari to be quite honest.

“He’s turned it down numerous times, he hasn’t had the best experience of dealing with Italy in his life with the whole [Ayrton] Senna trial thing, that made a big mark on him.

“Doesn’t necessarily mean he wouldn’t do it, and I also know that he’s not going to do it John Barnard style.

“Obviously when John Barnard was at Ferrari twice in fact this happened, he said I’m not going to do it in Italy, so they let him build up a technical facility in Guildford to do it and in fact, he built up two technical facilities quite close to each other in Guildford because he had two stints at Ferrari.

“If Newey does Ferrari he will be all-in on Ferrari. Not Ferrari F1 purely, but on the wider thing but I just don’t think…I don’t think it’s going to be Ferrari, it could be.

“Newey’s the only one who knows what he’s thinking but I’m not convinced.”

Ferrari might have to up the ante in convincing Newey to join the team if he remains unconvinced and may have another trick up their sleeve.

That’s because they could try and tempt Newey’s colleague Pierre Wache to the team as well.

It would create a dream team around Hamilton at Ferrari that would put them in a phenomenal position to finally end their championship drought.

But, as this season has already shown, anything can happen inside the Formula 1 Piranha Club.
