'No exception': Father of 'devastating' £30m forward suggests his son wants to play in PL after Spurs links emerge

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his squad further.

Spurs have had a decent season in which there have been notable improvements since last term, but there’s still work to do.

One area in the squad Tottenham could look to improve on during the summer window is in attack.

Spurs haven’t yet brought in a like-for-like Harry Kane replacement this season, while Timo Werner’s future is still uncertain.

Now, the father of a player said to be on Tottenham’s radar has suggested that his son is eager to play at the “highest possible level”.

The player in question is Iceland international Albert Gudmundsson, who has been going from strength to strength at Genoa.

Calciomercato recently reported that Spurs are in the mix for the 26-year-old, along with Inter Milan and Juventus.

The report claimed that the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri may struggle to reach Genoa’s valuation, which could exceed €35million (£30million).

A way round it would be with clauses and other ‘technical counterparts’, but Genoa would prefer straight cash, something Tottenham should be able to achieve.

What has Albert Gudmundsson’s father said about his son’s future amid Tottenham links?

Calciomercato.it have spoken with Gudmundsson’s father, Gudmundur Benediktsson, to find out his thoughts over his son’s future.

Benediktsson, a former professional footballer and a manager, was directly asked if his son should change clubs in the summer window.

“It’s a really difficult question,” he said. “He loves his life in Genoa and I still see him there, but in football anything can happen. It should not be forgotten that Genoa are also a great club.”

Benediktsson was then asked about whether Gudmundsson would prefer to stay in Italy or move to the Premier League.

Responding to that, Benediktsson explained: “I think every footballer wants to play at the highest possible level and Albert is probably no exception. Personally, I would like to see him stay in Italy.”

Who is Tottenham Hotspur target Albert Gudmundsson?

Born in Reykjavik, Gudmundsson began his career in KR Reykjavik’s youth setup, but was quickly snapped up by Heerenveen’s academy in 2013.

He progressed through the ranks of Dutch football, going on to play for the likes of PSV Eindhoven and AZ, before joining Genoa in 2022 for a reported £1million.

Gudmundsson played a key role in their promotion from Serie B in 2022-23, scoring 11 goals and also registering five assists in 36 games.

He has continued to develop and, this season, he has caught the eye of Premier League and Serie A scouts with 16 goals and four assists from 34 club outings.

Gudmundsson is a versatile player who has featured in central midfield, No. 10, both flanks, second striker and even centre-forward in his career.

Late last year, teammate Kevin Strootman even said the reported Spurs target reminded him of Mohamed Salah when he was at Roma and deemed him “devastating”.
