Nebraska Cornhuskers pitcher Jackson Brockett stunned the Kansas State Wildcats during a midweek game, earning a no-hitter. For head coach Will Bolt, it was a special performance to watch.

Following the game, Bolt met with reporters. While speaking to them, he praised Brockett for being able to have the best pitching performance he’s ever seen amid a battle with adversity.

“It speaks to his character,” Will Bolt said. “He’s faced a lot of adversity this year, and he hasn’t traveled with us a couple of times, but he’s kept his head up and he’s worked. Like I said, he’s been really, really good in the live outings the last couple of weeks.”

It’s been a rough stretch of outings for Jackson Brockett prior to the no-hitter against Kansas State. The junior pitcher had made six appearances prior to getting the start against the Wildcats. In those games, the most innings he pitched in a single appearance was two, and in his three previous appearances, he gave up a total of eight hits, a walk, and three runs.

“It’s why baseball is the craziest game there is. You never know what you’re gonna get. That’s the best pitching performance I’ve ever seen in person,” Bolt said. “I’ve been a part of no-hitters before. That was the best against a good-hitting team in a situation where the team needed it. Man, that’s the best performance I’ve ever seen.”

For Will Bolt, it was the most impressive performance he’s seen because of the success that Brockett had with all of his pitches, but the fastball in particular.

“Just because he had everything going. The fastball, he held the fastball [velocity] for a guy who hasn’t thrown more than 40 pitches all year really. Coach [Rob] Childress and I have talked about it the last two weeks if we can get an opportunity to get him in a clean inning, or even if he’s more of a starter profile. That’s what he’s been, obviously, in his career to this point. His tough outings have come from when he’s gone into the stretch and some of those things,” Bolt said.

“Again, he had the curveball going, the change-up, and the fastball. It had such good life at the top of the zone.”

For a pitcher who Will Bolt mentioned planning on starting and seeing how far he’d be able to go in the game, almost as an extended opener, getting a no-hitter was incredible. Jackson Brockett finished the game with just two walks allowed and earned the win 8-0 over Kansas State.

With the win, Nebraska moved to 28-15 on the season. That includes a 10-5 conference record this season.
