In his second season with the South Carolina football program, quarterback LaNorris Sellers is settling in and seeing the vision from Shane Beamer much more clearly.

Sellers was a top-400 recruit and four-star prospect, a terrific recruiting win for Beamer for a player who could wind up the next Gamecock QB1. The talent is obviously there somewhere, but Sellers himself admits he wasn’t ready to play as a rookie immediately out of high school.

“I’m just saying, like, I understand the system now,” Sellers commented at a recent press conference when asked about his improvement from year one this offseason.

“Like, last year, I was just pretty much learning it, like, taking it on the fly, really,” he added. “But this year, I actually understand the process of the system, understand, like, why plays happen, the way they do, and why routes are there. And it just came a lot slower to me.”

The next level of football — whether that be jumping from middle to high school, then to college, and hopefully, to the NFL — usually brings an increase in speed of the game that many new players aren’t quite ready for. Sellers says that was the case with him last season but he’s really starting to get the hang of it now.

He certainly looked pretty comfortable in the spring game and turned in a strong performance in the exhibition, which drew praise from Coach Beamer afterwards.

“I thought LaNorris was really, really good,” Beamer said of the QB’s spring game performance. “He has been good all spring. I thought he just looked very very poised out there, very efficient, he looked good running the ball.”

Beamer specifically noted that Sellers looked great running the Gamecock system and made good decisions under center: “I thought he did a really good job just operating the offense, running when it presented itself and being able to make throws also.”

All signs are pointing up for LaNorris Sellers in his second offseason with the team. But that doesn’t mean he’s in line to start, per se, since the Gamecocks do have plenty of competition in the QB room, with Auburn transfer Robby Ashford headlining the group as a fifth-year veteran who’s logged starts in the SEC already.

Whether he starts or not, the good news for South Carolina fans is that Sellers and his head coach are really starting to see some progress in the second year of his career.
