An internal Finnish Party committee has recommended that MP Timo Vornanen be kicked out of the party's parliamentary group, after he was arrested for his suspected involvement in a shooting incident outside a Helsinki karaoke bar last Friday morning.

The suspected shooting incident began around 4am on Friday at the Ihku nightclub in downtown Helsinki, according to the police.

The incident occurred as Vornanen and another group of people got into an altercation which culminated in Vornanen producing a small-calibre firearm and firing a shot into the ground outside the venue.

Vornanen has argued that his role as a police officer for more than two decades before being elected into Parliament in 2023 allowed him to carry a weapon in public places.

Vornanen is a first-term MP from the eastern Finnish city of Joensuu. He is a member of the Parliament of Finland for the Finns party.

The incident is being investigated under the suspected charges of illegally threatening another person, causing serious danger to the life of another person and as a firearms offence.

The Finns Party's parliamentary is set to meet on Thursday to discuss the incident and consider ejecting Vornanen from the group.
