Why Welcome to Wrexham season three was released at an earlier date this year

Welcome to Wrexham season three has finally hit our screens, with yet another season of unrivalled drama for Red Dragons fans to sink their teeth into.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are back on our television screens for the third instalment of the extremely popular Disney+ series – ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘.

This season follows Phil Parkinson and his first-team squad as they embark on their toughest task yet – navigating the treacherous paths of the English Football League, League Two to be specific.

But with the season having just ended, how has the turnaround for the new series been so quick?

Why Welcome to Wrexham season three was released at an earlier date

Season one and season two both hit the Disney+ library in Autumn, as opposed to the spring release date we’re now seeing with season three. Why is this the case?

Well, co-owner McElhenney told The Athletic in November 2023 the exact reason why. He said: “That was a decision that I came to early on. When I realised how much time was going to elapse between the end of the football season and the doc airing.

“I just felt as though there was a missed opportunity to line up a lot of the interests that are organic to the end of a football season and the interests of the documentary.

“I knew it would be an exceptional challenge to try and time it out because you don’t know what is going to happen, in the end. Of course, when you have this much time between the end of the season and airing of season two, you know what happens in the end.

“There are so many episodes that are crafted, knowing where it is headed. We knew it would be both a narrative and creative challenge — also an operational challenge — because we are going to have to completely change the way we work, both laying out and creating the storylines and then actually executing and delivering the show.

“The challenge will be worth it. We always like to switch things up and do the unexpected.”
