Prince Harry's unscripted comment during Meghan's speech said quite a lot

Prince Harry couldn’t help himself when he made a joke during Meghan Markle’s speech at the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018, which a royal author claims added to the awkward atmosphere.

Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and the now Prince and Princess of Wales were known as the Fab Four when the Sussexes were in The Firm. However, it seems the foursome’s bonds broke down before Harry and Meghan Markle moved to America and left their roles at the palace. Before they decided to step down, the four attended the 2018 Royal Foundation Forum, but it was Harry’s remark during Meghan Markle’s speech that caught the attention of one royal author.

Tom Bower, author of Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, he claimed the Duke interrupting Meghan Markle’s speech was more weighted than first thought, and most didn’t catch it at the time of the Royal Foundation Forum.

The now 42-year-old celebrity was explaining the vital work she wanted to get involved in now she was part of the palace. Meghan was interested in empowering women and giving a passionate speech, but the Duke chimed in to crack a joke.

The mom-of-two told the audience at the time: “With so many campaigns like MeToo and TimesUp, there’s no better time to continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people supporting them.

“You’ll often hear people say, ‘Well you’re helping people find their voice’ and I fundamentally disagree with that, because women don’t need to find a voice. They have a voice, they need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen.”

But when the Suits star was speaking, Prince William was grinning and Harry whispered loudly to him ‘Wedding first’, to imply the two hadn’t tied the knot yet and she shouldn’t run before she could walk.

Bower says his interjection painted a larger picture.

While the four all laughed, Bower claims it was his way of reminding his fiancé at the time to not get ahead of herself. “‘We can multi-task,’ Meghan replied to the unexpected interruption.”

The rhythm was ‘disrupted’

The royal author argues, while members of the Firm are patrons of the Royal Foundation Forum, they have limited influence, whether it was newbie Meghan Markle or the heir to the throne William.

He adds: “That power was exercised by the Foundation’s executives, an unimpressive group criticized for ineptly moving the royals around like chess pieces.

“While William, Kate and Harry had become accustomed to their motley behaviour, Meghan’s arrival as a natural recruit for the Foundation’s philanthropic work disturbed the rhythm of the executives’ habits.

“Her feminism also upset their ingrained conservatism.”

The Duchess has been a proud feminist, often re-telling the story of how she wrote to a cleaning company as a child to ask them to change their commercial. The youngster was upset only women were ever featured in the adverts, implying their sole role was cleaning and homekeeping.

It led to the company changing the writing at the end of the commercial too.
