'Outstanding': Tony Cascarino says Aston Villa have an 'extraordinary' talent he rates higher than Phil Foden

Aston Villa have enjoyed a remarkable season that could well end in a Premier League top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Since Unai Emery took the Villans reins, he has transformed the claret-and-blue side into one of the Premier League’s most improved teams.

A combination of great tactics, superb man-management and top signings have culminated in the Villans now being favourites for a top-four spot.

While most of Villa’s players have been outstanding this season, one player in particular has really been making waves and is now firmly in the spotlight.

The player in question is Ollie Watkins, who is joint-third in the Premier League top goalscorers’ rankings.

Watkins has 19 goals in the league this term, putting him level with Alexander Isak. He also leads the assists rankings, with 12 this term.

And that’s before mentioning the 28-year-old’s overall tally when you include his Conference League output, putting him on 27 goals in all competitions.

Watkins’ heroics have led to Tony Cascarino voting for the Villa man ahead of Manchester City’s Phil Foden for the Player of the Season award.

What has Tony Cascarino said about Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins?

Cascarino told talkSPORT on Saturday (4/5/24, 7:58am): “I still think Ollie Watkins will still be my number one.

“I think what he has done this year, and he hasn’t taken any penalty, his assists, his goals, his consistency, has been extraordinary. So, yeah, that’s the reason.

“If we had said at the start of the season that Man City would win the league or will be definitely first or second, that’s obvious.

“Arsenal, we pretty much felt with the signing of Declan Rice that they will go really well again and improve on last year. That’s happened.

“Did we think that Villa could come fourth? No chance. How many people thought that Villa could come fourth?

“Look, Villa are a good team, they are a good side, but they are a very united side in the way they play. You feel the unity between each players.

“I think Ollie Watkins has been their outstanding player.”
