Maximum number of Safari tabs you can have open on your iPhone is insane

There are two kinds of iPhone users: the ones who close all their Safari tabs, and the ones who don’t.

Whichever one you are, have you ever wondered what the maximum number of tabs you can have open is?

Maximum number of iPhone tabs

One woman took to TikTok to share that she had found out the answer after reaching the maximum on her own phone.

“Just in case anyone was wondering how many tabs you can have open before Apple asks you to close some, it’s 500,” she said.

When you reach 500, you get a notification that says: “You have 500 tabs open, and [this number] older than one month.”

“To open more you will need to close some tabs,” it continues – and you must close some before you can open a new one.

However, there are a few loopholes. If you click on a link, Safari will be forced to open another tab even if you are at 500.

You can also have 500 on both public and private, so that’s technically 1,000 all together if you use both versions.

iPhone users are divided

On a normal iPhone, only four tabs fit on the screen, so 500 is an insane number – but not everyone thinks so.

Many are saying it’s wild that people could ever have 500 tabs open and love to keep their iPhone nice and neat.

One person commented: “Nooo. My brain would freak with 10 open.”

“HOW DO YOU GET THAT MUCH?” asked another.

However, on the other end of the scale, others have reached 500 lots of times and are wishing the maximum was more.

A third person added: “I hit the 500 mark monthly.”

“I never close the other 499, I keep using that last tab over and over,” someone else said.

How to close all tabs

If you’ve just realised you have an extortionate number of tabs open, you don’t need to close them all individually.

Here’s how to close all tabs:

  • Click on one of your open tabs
  • Hold the tab icon in the bottom right
  • Select “Close All [X] Tabs”
