Roda JC Kerkade wrongly celebrate promotion - twice

Dutch second-division team Roda JC Kerkrade wrongly celebrated promotion to the top tier twice on Friday.

Roda went into the penultimate matchday in second place in the table, one point ahead of Groningen.

Immediately after the 2-0 home win against Cambuur, jubilant fans ran onto the pitch because in the parallel game Groningen had been 1-0 down from the first minute at 17th-placed Telstar.

But the players and coach Bas Sibum tried to calm the fans and stood together to watch the final seconds of the Groningen game on phones.

In the fifth minute of injury time, Groningen equalized to make it 1-1 - meaning no promotion just yet for Roda.

But just two minutes later, fans stormed the pitch, Roda players jumped into each other's arms and captain Matisse Didden was carried on the shoulders of a supporter while waving his jersey exuberantly.

A rumour had gone around that Telstar had scored the winning goal to make it 2-1 against Groningen and Roda's stadium announcer believed it so informed fans via loud speaker.

It turned out this was false and players and fans eventually realized.

"I'm only human," stadium announcer Wim Frijns told Voetbal International.

There may be another twist in the tale. Roda need one more point to secure promotion but play away on the final matchday - at Groningen.

League leaders Willem II Tilburg have already been promoted.
