'I think...': Danny Rohl quizzed on his Sheffield Wednesday future as Sunderland win secures safety

Danny Rohl has again been quizzed on his Sheffield Wednesday future after securing Championship safety.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday have completed their great escape in the Championship this season.

A 2-0 win at Sunderland on the final day of the campaign sees the Owls finish in 20th, with Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town, and Birmingham City relegated.

In the end, Wednesday finish with a three-point gap to safety.

It comes after the Owls went without a win in their first 13 games of the season, becoming the first-ever Championship side to beat the drop after going winless in that many games at the start of a campaign.

Rohl’s future remains a huge talking point.

There’s been an air of expectation that if Sheffield Wednesday beat the drop, Rohl stays on board for at least the next season.

But there’s another, heavier air of pressure now on owner Dejphon Chansiri to back Rohl in the summer.

Danny Rohl quizzed on Sheffield Wednesday future after Sunderland

After the game and after the Sheffield Wednesday celebrations, Rohl spoke to BBC reporter Rob Staton, who ended the interview with a question about Rohl’s future at the club from here.

Rohl replied: “I think I said this before in some interviews. What is important that we have a direction. I think I have idea how this direction could be like. But just to have a idea it’s of course not enough… We know this club has a high potential when you see what it means for the people in the city.”

The key things that Dejphon Chansiri needs to do this summer

Rohl mentioned previously that the facilities at Sheffield Wednesday need improving.

The changing rooms were among the things Rohl hinted at, and then there’s the issue of the playing squad.

There’s up to 15 first-team players now leaving Hillsborough either as free agents or having come to the end of their loan deals.

So for Rohl, rebuilding that will be the main task this summer, though he’ll need some resources to do so.

Rohl won’t want to be limited to free agents and loan players again.

He’ll surely have his eye on suitable players for his style and the club’s model going forward and some of them may be expensive.

So for Chansiri, it could be a costly summer ahead, but one that’s very much an investment for the future.
