Ex-Gers star at centre of historic Prem promotion celebrations, ex-Ibrox teammate misses out

When George Edmundson left Rangers for Ipswich Town in 2021 he was joining a club in English football’s third tier.

Three years later, the Tractor Boys are heading to the Premier League.

In a quite remarkable turn of events, Ipswich have earned back-to-back promotions and broke through English football’s competitive second tier to earn a top flight return 22 years in the making.

Needless to say, there were scenes aplenty at Portman Road as the club’s stunning promotion was confirmed this afternoon.

Edmundson and Ipswich heading to Premier League

Ipswich Town have defeated Huddersfield 2-0 to confirm a miraculous promotion to the English Premier League under manager Kieran McKenna.

Ex-Rangers defender George Edmundson was an unused substitute on the day as Wes Burns and Omari Hutchison secured promotion on the final day of the English Championship season.

The victory sparked wild scenes at Portman Road, where jubilant Ipswich Town supporters invaded the pitch.

Whilst ex-Ger Edmundson didn’t play in this match, the 26-year-old did have his role to play in the league season.

The back-up defender made 10 appearances in the English Championship this season and will be a Premier League player when next season kicks off.

We imagine he might have quite the headache when he wakes up tomorrow morning too!

Rangers sold George Edmundson to Ipswich for around £1m three seasons ago, the centre-back signing a four-year deal with the Tractor Boys.

Glen Kamara could still earn Rangers payday

Whilst there will be celebrations aplenty for George Edmundson and Ipswich Town, another ex-Rangers star has suffered bitter disappointment.

Glen Kamara is a former Ibrox teammate of ‘the Fridge’ and moved to Leeds United in a reported £5m deal this summer.

With Rangers set to receive extra benefits from the deal in the event of the Elland Road club’s promotion, Leeds United have missed out on an automatic Premier League place at Ipswich’s expense.

Leicester City confirmed top spot in the English Championship despite losing 2–0 at home to Blackburn Rovers on the final day.

Leeds United lost 2-1 to Southampton to consign them to the Championship promotion playoffs and if Glen Kamara is to earn a shot at Premier League glory, the Finnish international will have to do it the hard way.

Now facing a double-header against Norwich City to earn a playoff final date at Wembley, Southampton and West Brom at the other two sides vying for the final third promotion slot south of the border.
