Israeli warplanes strike Gaza, no progress yet in truce deal

Palestinians in Gaza faced another night of Israeli assaults, with airstrikes reported across the besieged enclave in the early hours of Sunday, marking the 212th day of the war as fragile ceasefire talks continued in Cairo.

Israel launched attacks on neighbourhoods east of Rafah which killed and injured several civilians, while jets struck areas in near Gaza City and in central Gaza, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza including the release of a number of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners are expected in Cairo on Sunday with the two sides struggling to agree to details, including Hamas' request that any deal includes an outright end to the war.

Israel has yet to send a delegation to Cairo, with a top official telling AFP that it would do so only if there were "positive movement" on the proposed framework.

"Tough and long negotiations are expected for an actual deal," the Israeli official said.
