Hundreds protest in Germany at performance of Russian singer Netrebko

Several hundred people have protested against a performance of Russian-born opera singer Anna Netrebko near Frankfurt, police said on Sunday.

Some 400 demonstrators gathered near the State Theatre of the German state of Hesse in the city of Wiesbaden, just west of Frankfurt, for two separate peaceful protests on Saturday evening, according to a police spokesman.

A renowned soprano, Netrebko has been criticized over her pro-Putin stance following Russia's invasion of Ukraine ordered by the Russian president in February 2022.

Netrebko was previously met with protests during her performance at the May Festival in Wiesbaden last year.

Just days ago, a concert scheduled for June 1 in the Swiss city of Lucerne was cancelled over Netrebok's planned participation following pressure from the local government.

In the recent past, concerts with Netrebko, who holds dual Russian-Austrian citizenship, have been cancelled in numerous Western countries. Her management maintains that Netrebko has publicly criticized the war in Ukraine.

The singer has since been invited back to the international stage, including performances at the Berlin State Opera in September and the Opera Ball in Vienna in February.
