Movie star dies hours before his onscreen return - 'one of the best in cinema history'

Bernard Hill, actor best known for his roles in films including Titanic and Lord Of The Rings, has died at 79.

The movie star won a number of awards for his role as King Theoden in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and featured in Titanic, as Captain Edward Smith. Tributes are currently pouring in for the star, as friends say “it was a privilege to have crossed paths with him.”

Bernard Hill dies at 79

The actor’s death was confirmed by his agent, who said he died in the early hours of the morning. His death sadly comes hours before his TV return in BBC drama, The Responder.

Hill was born in Manchester, UK in 1944, and graduated with a diploma in theatre in 1970. His ‘big break’ came in the early 1980s, when he was cast as Yosser Hughes in the TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff.

In 1997, he was cast as Captain Edward Smith in Titanic, alongside Hollywood stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

In 2002, he was cast as King Théoden of Rohan in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, which received 17 Academy Awards.

Hill is survived by his wife Marianna Hill and their son Gabriel.

Tributes pour in for the star as fans call LOTR scenes ‘one of the best in cinema history’

As the sad news breaks, friends, colleagues, and fans have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter to remember the star.

“It’s with great sadness that I note the death of Bernard Hill,” music star Barbara Dickson wrote. “We worked together in John Paul George Ringo and Bert, Willy Russell marvelous show 1974-1975.

“A really marvelous actor. It was a privilege to have crossed paths with him. RIP Benny x,” she concluded.

“Rest in Peace Bernard Hill – the man responsible for 𝗧𝗛𝗘 most iconic scene in cinematic history,” wrote one fan. “A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride to Gondor!”

“RIP Bernard Hill. His speech as King Theoden in RTK will go down as one of the best in cinema history,” another wrote.

A fourth agreed: “His portrayal of King Théoden is just incredible – what a legacy to have.”
