I prepared 'Skittles Popcorn' as TikTok suggested, but OMG do I have a warning for fellow foodies

There are many delicious ways to prepare popcorn, but the one using Skittles as shown on TikTok is a method you should avoid at all costs.

As it turns out, I finally found a hack on TikTok that appears to be created to fool the viewers. Unlike the bag hack to debone rotisserie chicken or DIY nail polish remover, the viral ‘Skittles Popcorn’ hack is only an illusion.

I tried the ‘Skittles popcorn’ hack on TikTok

Popcorn is my go-to snack and I enjoy it more when prepared with different flavors. I was thrilled when I came across ‘Skittles Popcorn’ on TikTok – colorful and supposedly sweet like the candy.

I wasted no time trying it myself as only two ingredients were required. I couldn’t wait to munch on candy-flavored rainbow popcorn while binge-watching my favorite show. Sounds like a perfect evening, no?

Before I get to everything that went wrong with the popular hack, here’s how it’s prepared.

Ingredients for ‘Skittles Popcorn’

  • Corn kernel and butter or instant popcorn.
  • Berry flavored Skittles
  • Heavy-bottomed pan with a transparent lid.

How to do it

The instructions are very simple, perhaps that’s why it doesn’t work.

  • Add corn kernel and Skittles to a heavy-bottom pan with ample butter.
  • Wait until the candy melts and the kernels pop.
  • Remove the transparent lid once the kernels stop popping, only to be disappointed.

Why I’ll never try the hack again

It didn’t take me long to realize the hack was meant to fail. Within a minute of adding all the ingredients, the candies started to melt, and before I could realize it, the melted sugar was starting to boil.

Somewhere between the fourth and fifth minute, the kernels started to pop and soon covered the molten cadies underneath.

I turned the stove off to lift the lid once the popping sound stopped and all I saw were charred candies holding the popcorn together. And, all the kernels hadn’t popped evenly, so I found a lot of it settled at the bottom.

Now coming to the taste, the ‘Skittles Popcorn’ is the worst-tasting snack I have ever put in my mouth. Not only was it utterly bitter from the excessively burnt sugar, but it had also hardened around the popcorn.

I scratched my gums as I struggled to eat the weird combination of my favorite candy and snack. I strongly recommend against the hack to save yourself time, money, energy, and a lot of cleaning thanks to the mess it leaves behind.
