‘Like a torpedo’: Carlos Sainz says 6-win F1 driver raced just like Daniil Kvyat during the Miami Grand Prix

The name Daniil Kvyat has been heard in the Formula 1 paddock for some time after leaving AlphaTauri at the end of the 2020 season.

However, he earned a reputation from Sebastian Vettel during his time at Red Bull – ‘the torpedo’ – after a crash at the 2016 Russian Grand Prix.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz suggested that another driver may be deserving of that nickname.

There was only one retirement from the race when Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant crashed and the home town hero was sent rear wing-first into the barriers.

Magnussen damaged his car and picked up another penalty on a weekend where he’s spent the majority of his time with the stewards and he’s closing in on a one-race ban as his penalty points accumulate.

However, there could have been a much bigger crash at the beginning of the Grand Prix that would have produced a very different result.

Carlos Sainz says that Sergio Perez’s dive into turn one at the Miami Grand Prix was reminiscent of Kvyat’s time in Formula 1.

The Mexican will hope his time at Red Bull doesn’t end in the same way as the 112-race driver.

Carlos Sainz says Sergio Perez was ‘like a torpedo’ at the Miami Grand Prix

Max Verstappen may have missed out on standings on the top step of the podium but he nearly didn’t make it beyond the first corner.

While he was happy for Lando Norris after securing his first F1 victory, he would have been furious with Perez if he had ended his race.

Perez got away from the line very well but he was stuck behind Charles Leclerc who didn’t get the best getaway.

The Mexican then dove down the inside to try and overtake both Ferraris on his outside, but locked up and was never going to make the corner.

He was millimetres away from hitting the back of Verstappen’s car at a speed that would have almost certainly ended his Grand Prix.

Perez then watched Leclerc and Sainz go past him and nearly hit the Spaniard when he re-joined the track in Miami.

Carlos Sainz had a frustrating race weekend and his battle with Oscar Piastri ended up costing both drivers).

He picked up a penalty while the Australian missed out on points altogether after having to change his front wing following contact into turn 17.

Carlos Sainz has frustrating weekend after strong start to 2024 F1 season

Reflecting on the race, Sainz said: “I think today, everyone was racing very hard. First Checo [Perez] at the start, like they said in the old days with Seb [Vettel], ‘he came like a torpedo’ and nearly took us all with him and lost me two positions.

“From then on, I was very quick. I saved my tyres and didn’t catch the Safety Car for one lap, which could have given us the win.

“Then frustrated with Oscar [Piastri], because he clearly pushed us off track and caused us to lose time with Charles [Leclerc] and Max [Verstappen].

“I saw the stewards were not being very aggressive today with penalties, so I had to be aggressive to send it.”

Sainz and his rivals at the front of the grid will be glad that they managed to avoid Perez going into turn one in Miami.

However, he couldn’t get past Daniel Ricciardo in the Sprint Race and that allowed Leclerc to extend the gap over him in the Drivers’ Championship.

He’s still got the bragging rights within the Ferrari garage of being the only one of their two drivers to have secured a race victory this season.

In his search for a new race seat in 2025 and beyond, Sainz didn’t thrust himself into the limelight with his performances during the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
