Roy Keane aimed brutal dig at Man Utd’s rivals after one moment from ‘smart cookie’ left him deeply ‘cringing’

Manchester United legend Roy Keane admitted that one moment from Premier League side Liverpool left him “cringing” when he watched it from his home.

Liverpool were dealt a major shock in January after long-standing manager Jurgen Klopp announced he would be stepping down at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp, who arrived at Anfield in 2015, has been widely hailed for his transformative impact on Manchester United’s arch-rivals.

The 56-year-old German has lifted a Premier League title, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cups during his time with Liverpool.

Roy Keane has also opened up about his admiration for former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp ahead of the Liverpool boss’ departure this summer.

Klopp led Liverpool to the Carabao Cup trophy in February, but the Reds boss’ hopes of a treble or quadruple are well and truly over.

Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup quarter-finals in March after United caused a stunning 4-3 upset at Old Trafford in March.

The Reds also exited the Europa League in the quarter-finals, while Liverpool are five points adrift from Arsenal in the title race with two matches remaining.

Keane’s ‘cringe’ at Liverpool moment

Liverpool went viral during the early period of Jurgen Klopp’s reign at Anfield after their celebrations following a 2-2 draw against West Brom in 2015.

Liverpool had won three matches, drawn two and lost twice under Klopp before the Reds welcomed West Brom to Anfield for their Premier League match.

Jordan Henderson fired Liverpool into the lead before West Brom rallied back and took the lead through Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson.

However, Divock Origi struck deep into injury time to ensure the Reds sealed a Premier League point against West Brom.

Following the match, Liverpool players held hands and celebrated in front of the Anfield faithful, with Reds fans mocked by rival supporters after it went viral.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Roy Keane revealed that he watched the viral moment when he was at home and he was “cringing” at what he saw.

“[That game vs] West Brom, they drew and he’s got them all cheering and holding hands at the end,” he said, as per The Daily Mail.

“I was at home cringing going what’s this guy up to?

“But he knew what he was doing. He’s a smart cookie.”

Keane on Sir Alex Ferguson difference

Keane was quizzed on his time under legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and was asked if he received any hugs from the Scotsman.

The former United captain insisted that Sir Alex Ferguson had a different “style” to Klopp, despite admitting that he “didn’t want any” hugs from his former manager.

“Maybe not too many [hugs] but I didn’t want any,” Keane continued.

“We were there to do a job and win trophies and that’s the style of that manager.

“Things have changed. We see most managers now on the pitch every week. Times are changing.”
