Keeper Schlager becomes latest Austrian injury before Euros

Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager faces a race to be fit for the European Championship.

The Salzburg stopper underwent surgery on his left knee on Monday, ending his season prematurely, his club announced.

For Austria coach Ralf Rangnick, Schlager's absence would be the latest bit of bad news ahead of the Euros in Germany from June 14 to July 14.

Defender David Alaba from Real Madrid, RB Leipzig midfielder Xaver Schlager and striker Sasa Kalajdzic of Eintracht Frankfurt have torn cruciate knee ligaments.

Schlager and Kalajdzic are definitely out of the Euros, while Alaba's participation would be a "minor miracle" according to Rangnick.

A number of centre backs such as Philipp Lienhart (Freiburg), Maximilian Wöber (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Kevin Danso (RC Lens) are also currently unfit.
