Report: Russia tightens regulations on 'foreign agents'

Russia has further tightened its contentious legislation on so-called foreign agents, the Interfax news agency reported.

It said that the parliament in Moscow approved an amendment to the law on Monday that withdraws the right to stand for election from persons categorized as "foreign agents."

Those affected will no longer be able to register as candidates in national, regional or local elections. In addition, "foreign agents" will no longer be allowed to act as election observers.

The controversial "foreign agents" law targets people, media and non-governmental organizations in Russia that are not loyal to the government's party line.

This categorization is often associated with major professional barriers for those affected, including risks to their safety.

For example, people who are listed as "foreign agents" are banned from teaching in Russian schools.

It is seen by observers as a means of political repression to silence critics.

The Kremlin has been increasingly clamping down on dissidents since launching the war on Ukraine more than two years ago.
