49ers should be on red alert as PL club ready to sell star for £15m, he wanted Leeds move last summer - opinion

Leeds United were linked with a number of players last summer as Daniel Farke looked to strengthen his side, and one of those is now available for a £15m fee.

Described as the best player in the Championship before he swapped Coventry City for Sheffield United by Enzo Maresca, Gustavo Hamer starred for the Sky Blues before earning a shot at the Premier League.

The 26-year-old had a hand in 21 goals prior to his move to The Blades and that tempted Sheffield United to lure him to Yorkshire ahead of their bid to stave off the threat of relegation during the 2023-24 season.

While it did not work, Brazil-born Hamer impressed for The Blades. He has had a hand in 12 goals in 38 games for Sheffield United despite them sitting rock bottom of the League and a change in management.

But with relegation on the horizon, Sheffield United are planning for the future and need to rake in some cash. The Sun’s Alan Nixon says they’re ready to sell Hamer for the same fee he cost to sign, about £15m.

Leeds wanted to sign Gustavo Hamer as Daniel Farke eyed a no.10

Leeds were keen on luring an attacking midfielder to Elland Road last summer and it still an area in which the squad is lacking. Joel Piroe started the season as a 10 before Georginio Rutter moved into that role.

Nadiem Amiri, Matt O’Riley, Kenny McLean and plenty of other technically gifted midfielders were on the radar at Elland Road – as was Hamer, with reports even claiming Leeds tabled a bid for the playmaker.

Phil Hay said Hamer was keen on Leeds before Sheffield United swooped, the lure of the Premier League too much for Hamer to ignore. But now, his side are about to be relegated and he’s on the move again.

Hamer would be a brilliant signing for Leeds this summer

In terms of the reasons why Leeds wanted Hamer, the void of a natural no.10 and the ability to break down a low block which The Whites have had to do countless times this season, still remains an issue.

Leeds will still have the cash to spend £15m on a player like Hamer whether that is in the Premier League or in the Championship. Whether Hamer is keen or not after a taste of the top flight, remains to be seen.

But if there is a chance for Leeds to make Hamer a summer signing, whichever division we find ourselves in next season, then Farke and The 49ers simply have to do it, He would be a wonderful addition.
