Hayden Hackney drops potential hint on Leeds loanee Sam Greenwood's future on Instagram

Hayden Hackney has perhaps dropped a hint concerning the future of Sam Greenwood after replying to the Leeds United loanee on Instagram following the end of his loan spell with Middlesbrough.

While Leeds’ season is not over, some players on the club’s books have now made their final appearances of the campaign, with Sam Greenwood amongst those.

The 22-year-old has spent the majority of the season on loan with Middlesbrough, scoring five goals and contributing three assists for Michael Carrick’s side.

Greenwood has been in the match day squad for every league game this season, apart from Boro’s two fixtures with Leeds. And some may be wondering if Carrick will look to sign him permanently.

Greenwood’s loan includes a £1.5 million option to buy, and when he scored four goals in six league games before the November international break, it seemed to be inevitable that they would look to keep him.

However, Greenwood has not scored in the league since mid-December. So there is potentially a much larger question mark over whether his future lies.

Greenwood has now taken to Instagram to thank Middlesbrough for the year he has spent with the club. And the response of Hayden Hackney is perhaps interesting, with the youngster replying… ‘Gunna miss you bro’.

Leeds may be pleased to keep youngster if Daniel Farke’s side miss out on promotion

Of course, Hackney’s response confirms nothing. Middlesbrough may be keeping their summer plans under wraps while they wait for the season to officially end.

But Hackney would surely not make such a remark unless there had been an indication that Greenwood was set to return to Leeds.

And that would open up another debate concerning whether he should get another chance at Elland Road.

When you consider that no Leeds central midfielder has scored a league goal this season, and that the Whites’ set-pieces have been so poor, you do have to wonder whether Middlesbrough not signing Greenwood permanently – if that proves to be the case – proves to be a blessing in disguise.
