Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is still a believer in Dak Prescott to lead Dallas to a Super Bowl.
As it comes up every year, is Prescott good enough to do it for the Cowboys? And will he get another contract extension? It’s like deja vu all over again, according to Yogi Berra.
But Jones won’t stray from his belief in his veteran quarterback. Prescott still has what it takes.
“Absolutely. I mean, I totally think that Dak can lead us to a championship,” Jones told Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports Radio. “He does everything the right way. You know, he’s certainly the leader of this football team. He keeps everybody motivated in the offseason. He’s got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship. It just so happens that you know … we’ve had some tough breaks and tough games in the postseason.”
Jones chose to look at the positives though. Dallas has had success under Prescott leading into the playoffs.
“But, you know, we’ve won 12 games three years in a row,” Jones said. “I think that’s right at the top in terms of what teams have done over a three year period and you know, we’re hanging around the rim. Just need this guy to go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it in. We’re hanging around the rim. We just got to get the job done.”
Stephen’s elder, and Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones wants Prescott to remain the starting quarterback in Dallas in 2024 and beyond, but he said recently that, “We’d like to see more leaves fall” before giving Prescott a long-term deal.
Prescott shared last Wednesday that he is “aware” of Jones’ comments and has no problem with them. In fact, he said that he and Jerry Jones are viewing contract talks through the same lens.
“Obviously still [having] conversations,” Prescott said. “Aware of what Jerry said. Everything he said is dead on. Communication has been back and forth.”
Things could obviously change, but as of now, it seems that the Cowboys might let the 2024 season play out before worrying about signing Prescott to a new contract.
Prescott, 30, is coming off his best season to date in the NFL, leading the league with 36 touchdown passes. Prescott finished second in the NFL AP MVP Award voting, only behind Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.
Dallas went 12-5 for the third consecutive season but failed to win a playoff game. With Prescott under center, the Cowboys are 2-5 in the postseason.
