'Talks are underway': Sheffield Wednesday in discussions with 'important' hero over new deal - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday have now opened contract talks with one of their most ‘important’ players.

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed their place in the Championship only a few days ago, having beaten Sunderland 2-0 on the road.

The Owls only needed a point, but a courageous performance means they finish the campaign in 20th place – only three points below the Black Cats.

It was an exceptional end to the season from Danny Rohl‘s side, who picked up three wins on the bounce and were unbeaten in their final six matches.

Wednesday failed to climb out of the relegation zone all season until they beat Blackburn Rovers only a few weeks ago.

Confirmation of their Championship status will now set the club in motion, as they look to try and tie a number of players down to new contracts.

The Owls could see over ten players leave on a free transfer this summer, but their success in avoiding relegation means they could keep hold a number of key assets.

One hugely ‘important’ player who they are now eager to keep is Josh Windass.

According to journalist Joe Crann, the Yorkshire outfit are already in ‘talks’ to offer the midfielder a fresh deal at Hillsborough.

Crann wrote on X: “Josh Windass showed at the end of the season how important he can be, and it’s no surprise that #SWFC’s form took an upturn when he came back… Getting him on a new deal would be great for the club. Talks are underway.”

The 30-year-old has really proven his importance in recent weeks, having scored in each of his last three appearances for the Owls – taking his tally to nine goal contributions in 28 games in all competitions.

Is Josh Windass the first step to a new era for the Owls?

It hasn’t been long since some Wednesday fans were urging to the club to get rid of him this summer due to his injury problems and hefty wage slip, however his contribution recently may have changed their minds.

Windass is currently raking in around £15,000-per-week at Hillsborough, but is far from their highest earner, with Barry Bannan earning almost £10k more.

It could be an expensive summer for the Owls if they want to keep their star players, and it won’t stop there, as Danny Rohl will be eager to bring in some fresh faces to the camp too.

Dejphon Chansiri needs to use this recent success as a platform to build on and progress further up the table next season, which will mean opening his wallet and allowing the head coach to create a much better future for the club.

If he doesn’t, then it will be deja vu for the supporters, who could see Rohl depart and the Owls plunged back into a relegation scrap.
