'Time to rest up': Leeds United man Sam Greenwood drops potential hint on Middlesbrough future

On loan midfielder Sam Greenwood has dropped a huge hint on his future following the conclusion of the Championship season.

Middlesbrough secured the services of the midfielder for the season in the summer, with Leeds United allowing the 22-year-old to make the temporary switch.

His future beyond this season has been unclear for a while, with no real indication of whether Boro will look to make the deal permanent or indeed whether Leeds will push him out the exit door.

If Leeds are successful in the play-offs and secure a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking it would seem difficult for Greenwood to envisage himself playing much in England’s top tier.

That being said, there is a possibility the once-capped England under-21 international will not be at either his parent club or the club he has spent this season on loan at.

The player himself has now dropped a huge hint on whether he will be a Middlesbrough player next season on social media.

Sam Greenwood looks to have said Middlesbrough goodbyes

Greenwood took to Instagram to post what appears to be his farewell post to the club at which he has plied his trade this season.

The youngster posted a video of his season highlights on Instagram, with the caption:

@theboroofficial A club full of great people! Staff, teammates and supporters thank you for this season.
Full of ups & downs and I’ve loved every minute, time to rest up and recover.”

Whilst this does not close the door completely and things can change very quickly in football, it would seem that Greenwood does not expect to be making a return to Middlesbrough this summer.

Greenwood may have made the decision himself not to join Michael Carrick‘s side for next season, but equally the Boro boss may not feel the attacker is worth pursuing.

The loan will have provided the 22-year-old with invaluable experience given he has played 38 Championship games this season.

Prior to that, Greenwood had only made 35 senior appearances in his career according to Transfermarkt.

However, he has found himself in and out of the team and was more of a nice squad player to have rather than a key starting figure in the team.

He has made an impact, with five league goals and three assists but whether this has been enough for Boro to really push to sign him permanently is up for debate.

Given the player’s own social media update and Boro’s ambitions for next season, the club may be best off exploring alternative options over the summer.
