TV sisters majorly fell out over sitcom based on their mom - 'It reveals too much'

Kathy Hilton and her sisters have been known to fall out many times. Thankfully, these days, she and Kyle Richards are back on good terms. But, Kyle’s development of a TV series loosely based on their mom and childhood, American Woman, touched a nerve for Kathy back in the day.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards is being called out for her secrecy around her marriage breakdown. The star skirted around her split from Mauricio Umansky during the RHOBH reunion. And it looks like she’s not the only family member who prefers to keep some things under wraps. Kathy wasn’t happy about some things “revealed” during American Woman following its release.

Kyle Richards develops American Woman

Reality TV star Kyle spent years developing American Woman. The process began in 2015 and the TV series was released three years later, in 2018.

American Woman is set in 1970s Los Angeles. It’s centered around a “posh single mom” AKA Kathy and Kyle’s mom, Kathleen Richards.

Kathleen was born in 1938 in Nebraska. She passed away in 2002 at the age of 64. She was mom to Kathy, Kyle, and their sister, Kim Richards.

RHOBH star’s work sparked rift

On April 17, Kyle paid tribute to her beloved late mom. She wrote in the caption how she “misses her every day.”

Kyle and her niece, Paris Hilton, also got talking about Kathleen during an episode of Paris’ podcast this year. The late matriarch of the family was clearly well-loved.

However, American Woman’s depiction of Kathleen is something that rubbed Kathy up the wrong way and caused a huge rift in the family.

Kathy suggested her mom was “portrayed in a bad light” but Kyle explained how she felt it was a “love letter” to Kathleen, reports Bravo’s Daily Dish.

Speaking in 2018 at the RHOBH season 8 reunion, Kyle explained to Andy Cohen that she and Kathy “weren’t speaking” and hadn’t communicated in six months because of the show.

She said: “I’m looking forward to her seeing American Woman” as she had hopes her sister would say she’d “read the situation wrong.”

Kyle added how the show may not have been the main cause of their falling out. She explained how she thinks the beef started when Mauricio left Rick Hilton’s real estate firm and opening his own agency.

The family feud is something they revisited this year as Mauricio gave his take on Buying Beverly Hills season 2.
