'Likely to be': Journalist shares asking price for 'fantastic' Wolves target, but there's a problem for O'Neil

Wolves were recently linked with a move for Queen’s Park Rangers defender Jake Clarke-Salter – and now the club have learned how much he could cost this summer.

Wolves are expected to move for a new centre-half this summer, with Gary O’Neil currently only having four options and using three at a time in games given the formation.

Recently, Craig Dawson – who has just turned 34 – picked up a groin injury and in the end, the star had to undergo surgery, which ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The veteran has been brilliant for Wolves, but there are question marks over him as a long-term option.

Wanderers were recently linked with QPR defender Jake Clarke-Salter – and now, the Telegraph’s John Percy has brought word of an asking price for the 26-year-old…

It was reported at the start of last month that Wolves were keeping tabs on Clarke-Salter, who enjoyed a really good 2023/24 and ultimately helped steer QPR away from the relegation zone.

The former Chelsea starlet ace made 33 appearances across all competitions, and his performances at the back were key in helping the club stay in the Championship.

As a result of his consistency, Clarke-Salter now has several clubs on his tail heading into the summer.

Wolves were recently linked, but there is also interest from Stoke City.

Telegraph journalist John Percy took to X this morning to talk about Clarke-Salter in relation to Stoke – and he dropped an approximate asking price from QPR. He said: “QPR defender Jake Clarke-Salter is a top summer target (for Stoke). Price likely to be £5-7m and other clubs (including in PL) potentially interested. Stoke looking to strengthen in a number of areas this summer.”

Stoke interest is a problem for O’Neil

So Wolves now know how much it may take to sign Clarke-Salter this summer. But the interest from Stoke is not ideal for Gary O’Neil.

He is a ‘top target’ for the Potters, suggesting Wanderers have a real battle on their hands if they want to sign him.

Wolves’ status as a Premier League club might hold a lot of weight for Clarke-Salter. But ultimately, he is a proven player in the Championship and he is likely to play more regularly for Stoke.

We’ll see what transpires, but £5-7 million seems likely a fairly reasonable asking price, for a player described as ‘fantastic’, and someone John Terry previously said reminded him of himself.

Perhaps if the club decided to cash in on Max Kilman, then there would be more of a chance of the move happening. The captain is thought to be a target for Manchester United, and Fosun may see an opportunity to turn a big profit on a player who cost just £40,000.
