Exclusive: Transfer expert expresses doubt over Jhon Duran future at Aston Villa

Aston Villa will be prepared for a busy summer after the highs that Unai Emery’s side have produced this season, however, not every player could be a part of the 2024/25 project.

With just two games of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign remaining, Aston Villa are in control of the race for the top four, sitting seven points ahead of Spurs.

As a result of the highs that Unai Emery’s side has achieved this this season, Monchi and the Villa boss could be in for another busy summer at Villa Park, with further quality required to maintain an upward trajectory.

A number of players have been linked with a move to Birmingham ahead of the summer transfer window although, the Villans may also have an eye on potential exits.

While the future of loan players Nicolo Zaniolo and Clement Lenglet hang in the balance, Emery could also be forced to soon oversee the departure of one of his first-teamers.

Jhon Duran may not have a long-term future at Aston Villa

Aside from the loan players, the boss may have to turn his attention to the future of Jhon Duran, who generated interest from a host of clubs in January, including Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Aston Villa News, HITC journalist Graeme Bailey explained that the 20-year-old’s stance at Villa is ‘interesting’ when commenting on the positions Emery and Monchi could target this summer.

“It’ll be interesting to see what they do in the forward line because, someone like Jhon Duran, I’m not sure whether he has a long-term future at Villa from what I’m hearing, so that’ll be an interesting one.”

The Colombian arrived at Villa in January 2023 from MLS club Chicago Fire and while he has impressed on occasions, the striker is far from being in a position of threatening Ollie Watkins’ spot as Emery’s prized number nine.

What does the future hold for Jhon Duran at Aston Villa?

At just 20 years old, there is an incredibly bright future ahead for Duran however, it’s uncertain whether the Colombia international will tolerate being Watkins’ number two at Villa forever.

It’s clear that the forward isn’t shy on confidence, with every chance he gets to represent Villa being memorable due to his ‘erratic’ approach to games, as he was once described by journalist Dean Jones.

While Duran is still very raw and in the preliminary stages of his career at Villa, Bailey’s comments on his long-term future being in the Midlands are somewhat unsurprising.

Having secured only two starts in the Premier League this season, the 2003-born gem would have certainly wanted to record more starts in Emery’s project, where he has averaged just 19 minutes per game this term, via Sofascore.

It would be a great shame for the Villans to lose Duran in the near future, with the striker having the fundamentals to be a key part of the manager’s squad next term.
