EXCLUSIVE with Graeme Bailey

Unai Emery has now held talks with a Spain international regarding a move to Aston Villa this summer.

Barring a late shock to end the 2023/24 campaign, the Villans look set to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after a stunning season under the Spaniard – which could still end with silverware in the UEFA Conference League.

As a result, transfer plans are being drawn up – and Unai Emery is confident of bringing a fellow Spaniard to Aston Villa

Aston Villa confident of signing Mario Hermoso after Unai Emery talks

TBR Football understand that Aston Villa are highly optimistic about signing Mario Hermoso this summer.

The Spain international – who has won five caps for his country – is set to leave Atletico Madrid this summer when his contract expires.

TBR Football are aware that Emery and also Monchi, President of Football Operations at Villa Park, have spoken to Hermoso as improvements are targeted in the left-back department, while the Spaniard can also operate in the centre of defence.

TBR Football understand that Emery is keen to sign Nico Williams and Alex Baena – although Hermoso is the most likely arrival as things stand.

Furthermore, the Villans have also spoken to Real Betis No.3 Juan Miranda.

Hermoso – who has previously been eyed by Tottenham – has interest from the Saudi Pro League as well as Italy, and prefers to remain in Europe.

The 28-year-old has made 41 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring two goals while also providing two assists.

Spaniard would be an excellent signing

Crucially, Hermoso boasts plenty of UEFA Champions League experience, having made 29 appearances in the competition for Atletico Madrid.

As things stand, Emery does not have much UEFA Champions League knowhow in his squad, so the Atletico Madrid No.22 – who has been compared to Sergio Ramos – would be a valuable addition to the group ahead of next season.

Additionally, the Aston Villa boss has spent plenty of time managing in Spain during spells at Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal while Hermoso has been shining for Atletico Madrid, so the Hondarribia-born tactician should know all about his fellow Spaniard and how best to use him.

Hopefully, the Villans can get this deal over the line.
