Czech Republic allows change of gender registration without surgery

The Czech Constitutional Court has stipulated that a legal change of gender can be possible in future without sterilization or surgical gender reassignment measures, after the court's judges made a ruling on Tuesday in the city of Brno.

The current legal requirements were contrary to the fundamental right to physical integrity and violated the human dignity of those affected, the court ruled.

The lawsuit was brought by a person who identifies as a man, although born female.

The judges gave the legislature until the middle of next year to amend the unconstitutional regulations.

Interior Minister Vít Rakušan wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that he was very pleased with the Constitutional Court's decision. The previous regulation had no place in the Europe of the 21st century, he said.

The Ministry of Justice explained that they had been working on an amendment for two years.

In Germany, the Bundestag gave the green light for a new gender self-determination law in mid-April, which stipulates that from November 1, people will be able to make the corresponding change by making a declaration to the registry office. The previous obligation to submit a medical certificate and several expert opinions is to be abolished.
