Renewables now exceed 30% of world's electricity, think tank says

Renewable sources of energy now account for over 30% of the world's electricity generation, according to a report published by a think tank on Wednesday.

"Growth in solar and wind pushed the world past 30% renewable
electricity for the first time in 2023," said a press release by Ember, an energy think tank.

According to Ember's report, the share of energy produced using renewable sources grew from 19% in 2000 to over 30% in 2023. All of that growth was down to increased use of wind and solar power.

The share of hydroelectric generation and other renewables in total energy production declined during the same period, the report said.

Ember suggested that global electricity generation from fossil fuels could start to decline in 2024.

"The rapid growth in solar and wind has brought the world to a
crucial turning point – likely this year – where fossil generation starts to decline at a global level," the press release said.

The report says its figures for 2023 come from 80 countries representing 92% of global energy demand.
