Arakurayama Sengen Park

With one of the most iconic views of Mount Fuji, Arakurayama Sengen Park shouldn’t be missed on trips to Yamanashi Prefecture. For a dash of nature and shrines amidst an incredible backdrop, head to Arakurayama Sengen Park.

Arakurayama Sengen Park was opened in 1959 and covers over four hectares. Located at the base of Mount Arakurayama, this park is famous for its fantastic views of nearby Mount Fuji. At the entrance to the park, you’ll see a large red torii (gate) welcoming you. Next, there are two main paths to take. The longer one winds up the mountain to Chureito Pagoda and the Observation Deck. Taking this way will also bring you past Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine.

Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine was originally constructed in 705. In the centuries that followed, several powerful leaders have visited or sent emissaries to the shrine. After Mount Fuji erupted in the early 800s, the emperor sent an envoy to pray at the shrine hoping to stop further eruptions. These days, many people visit the site to wish for easy childbirth and childrearing.

Behind Chureito Pagoda are stairs to the Observation Deck. From here, you can enjoy most of the most famous views of Mount Fuji with Chureito Pagoda in the foreground. Early April is the most popular time to visit Arakurayama Sengen Park. As you look out at Mount Fuji and the surrounding area, you’ll see over 650 Yoshino cherry trees in full bloom. Additionally, there’s also a cherry blossom festival at this time. Return in the autumn to see the landscape erupt into a sea of crimson as the leaves change color. With the colder winter weather comes frosted treetops that mirror the peak of Mount Fuji. If you continue up from the Observation Deck a bit more, the Fuji Panoramic Platform offers even more views of the towering natural wonder.
