'Top player': Jamie Bynoe-Gittens says player Man City let go in 2018 was better than Frank Lampard

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has claimed that a player Manchester City let go six years ago was a superior player to Frank Lampard.

The 19-year-old, who signed for Manchester City at Under-14 level must naturally have grown up watching them.

Currently, the England Under-21 international is at Borussia Dortmund, who reached the Champions League final by beating Paris Saint-Germain over two legs in the semi-final of the competition.

The Reading-born wonderkid was in the matchday squad for both games.

This season, the youngster has one goal and six assists for Dortmund in 13 Bundesliga starts.

A natural winger by trade, Bynoe-Gittens was perhaps inspired by several City players as an up-and-coming prospect.

Even so, Frank Lampard is widely considered one of the best players to have ever graced the Premier League, emphasising his legendary status in the English game.

John Terry, for instance, ranked his former Chelsea and England teammate ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and others as the greatest midfielder in Premier League history.

But in March, Paul Scholes claimed that Phil Foden was already a “much better footballer” than the former Everton boss.

Regardless, Lampard’s legacy is set in stone as an all-time great — sitting sixth on the list of the highest-scoring players in the Premier League era with 177 goals.

For context, Thierry Henry (175) has scored fewer goals in the league than the Chelsea icon.

Lampard also has the fifth-highest assists in the league’s history with 102.

While blind ranking Premier League midfielders with JD Sport on TikTok, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens ranked Frank Lampard in fourth place and Yaya Toure as number two on his list.

On Toure, Bynoe Gittens simply said: “Top player.”

Yaya Toure was better than Frank Lampard at his best

In our view, where one can agree with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is that at their best, Yaya Toure was a better player than Frank Lampard.

If comparing their respective Premier League careers, the former West Ham midfielder has the edge over the Ivorian, primarily due to his longevity.

Lampard played in the division for around two decades while Toure was at City for eight years.

At their best, Frank Lampard was an incredible goalscorer and creator but Yaya Toure seemed impossible to play against.

Toure’s unique blend of sublime technique, the ability to dictate games and superhuman stretch was perhaps not even prevalent in Lampard’s arsenal.

In addition, the way Yaya Toure could carry the ball and beat multiple players to score miraculous solo goals at will was a skill that Frank Lampard lacked.

For all of Lampard’s effectiveness, Toure’s seeming invincibility at his best perhaps gives him the edge over the former.
