Two English talents at centre of Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United transfer battle

Tottenham Hotspur only signed Radu Dragusin in January but are already being linked with another big-money addition to the heart of Ange Postecoglou’s back line.

Tottenham simply couldn’t come out of the January transfer window without a new centre back.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been a superb partnership when available this season but there was a lack of depth behind them.

Come November, Romero was suspended and Van de Ven was injured, leaving Ange Postecoglou to go with Emerson Royal and Ben Davies as a centre back pairing.

That just couldn’t continue so Tottenham brought in Dragusin from Genoa.

The Romanian had shown major potential in Italy’s top flight and even turned down a move to Bayern Munich in order to join Tottenham.

Dragusin has only started one Premier League game so far but Tottenham may still go for another centre back this summer.

Tottenham interested in three centre backs this summer

Tottenham fans can expect a busy summer window – especially after Postecoglou suggested that he needs to wheel and deal to build the squad as he wants it.

The London Evening Standard now suggest that Tottenham are looking at three major centre back additions.

It’s stated that Everton are bracing for offers for Jarrad Branthwaite with both Tottenham and Manchester United interested.

A tall, homegrown, left-footed centre back with a huge future ahead of him, it’s no surprise that Braithwaite is in demand.

The report adds that Spurs – and United – also both want Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.

Guehi is another homegrown talent who has already impressed in the Premier League and a big move away from Palace is surely on the cards either this summer or in 2025.

Todibo was heavily linked with Tottenham in January and is seemingly still on the Spurs radar for this summer.

The Frenchman was a real wonderkid before joining Barcelona in 2019, where his development stalled.

Now starting to shine again in France, Todibo is bound to attract interest again this summer.

United may be favourites for the 24-year-old, given that Ineos have control of football operations at both Nice and United.

Do Tottenham need a big-money centre back signing?

Tottenham certainly need signings this summer but whether a big-money centre back is needed is another matter.

Guehi and Branthwaite are bound to cost over £50million and Todibo may not be too far away from that range either.

Any centre back coming in going into the side over Romero and Van de Ven seems incredibly unlikely.

Even a talent like Dragusin has found that situation difficult, barely featuring since his move to Spurs in January.

Adding another centre back into the mix – and pushing Dragusin down the pecking order – would be a huge surprise.

If Tottenham are to add another centre back option, it would surely be somebody with positional versatility.

Perhaps a centre back who is impressive as a left back too, maybe a player with the capability to play at centre back or in holding midfield.

We can’t see Tottenham splashing the cash on another centre back this summer and a deal for Branthwaite, Guehi or Todibo would certainly surprise us.
