Rio Ferdinand backs former England striker to sign for Wrexham after Humphrey Ker comments

Wrexham have become headline news in recent years and that means we see big names touted for potential moves to the STōK Cae Ras.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have completely changed the trajectory of Wrexham and the last few years have been beyond the wildest dreams of many supporters.

Having been stuck in non-league since 2008, Wrexham needed something – somebody – to come in and bring brighter times.

McElhenney and Reynolds became the unlikely saviours, completing a 2021 takeover to bring a new era to Wrexham.

Now with back-to-back promotions secured, Wrexham can look forward to League One action for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The profile of the club has sky-rocketed in the last three years with Wrexham becoming incredibly popular over in the United States.

The impact of McElhenney, Reynolds and the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series is a huge reason for that and it’s no surprise when big names get tipped for Wrexham anymore.

Rio Ferdinand on Jamie Vardy to Wrexham

Any hopes of Gareth Bale joining Wrexham have been extinguished but what about Jamie Vardy?

The former England striker is out of contract this summer and it’s unclear whether he will sign a new deal with Leicester City.

Vardy racked up 18 goals in 35 Championship games to help Leicester secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Now reaching 12 years and more than 450 appearances as a Leicester player, Vardy’s future is up in the air.

Pundit and former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has now suggested that the only club he wants to see Vardy sign for is Wrexham.

Speaking on FIVE, Ferdinand admitted that he thinks Vardy should stay at Leicester and score more Premier League goals.

Yet if Vardy is to leave Leicester, Ferdinand feels that Wrexham is the ideal home for him, allowing him to continue a ‘Hollywood career’ at Wrexham.

“He’s got to play another season in the Premier League, surely no? I want to see him get a couple of goals in the Premier League man, it’s nice.”

“The only club I’d like him to go to now, if he was going to leave, would be Wrexham. It’s got that Hollywood feel and he’s had a bit of a Hollywood career, I think,” he added.

Vardy not ruled out

Wrexham may have a host of experienced strikers involved next season.

29-year-old duo Jack Marriott and Paul Mullin are contracted for next season and 32-year-old Ollie Palmer will be making the step up too.

Steven Fletcher – who turned 37 in March – has been offered a new contract to stay at the STōK Cae Ras for another year.

Adding in another 37-year-old in Vardy would be a bold step but Humphrey Ker has refused to rule out a move.

Ker has suggested that Vardy hasn’t been brought up in conversations just yet but that his age wouldn’t put Wrexham off.

A move for Vardy would certainly make great TV for future ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ episodes but staying at Leicester seems much more likely as things stand.
