Wrexham hero misses out on promotion, now set for emotional Stōk Cae Ras return next season

Wrexham are preparing for life in League One next season and the list of opponents is starting to take shape as Phil Parkinson watches on.

Wrexham have gone from the National League to League One in rapid fashion, securing back-to-back promotions after two superb campaigns.

Phil Parkinson has made himself a Wrexham hero for life and the club is now preparing for a first League One campaign in nearly 20 years.

The Championship season came to an end last weekend, so we now know that Birmingham City will join Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town in being relegated to League One.

Those are certainly some interesting fixtures whilst Derby County and Portsmouth have gone up to the Championship.

The League One play-off picture is becoming clearer too after Bolton Wanderers beat Barnsley in their semi-final clash on Tuesday.

Wrexham hero Darren Ferguson misses out on promotion

Wednesday night saw Oxford United take on Peterborough United for a spot in the League One play-off final – and it was Oxford who ran out winners.

Oxford won the first leg 1-0 on Saturday and booked their tickets for Wembley after drawing 1-1 with the Posh on Tuesday night.

That means Wrexham fans can look forward to a meeting with former midfield hero Darren Ferguson next season.

Ferguson has won four promotions across four spells with Peterborough and three of those have been out of League One.

A fifth has now evaded Peterborough and Ferguson as Oxford managed to fend off late pressure to reach the play-off final.

Cameron Brannagan equalised from the spot, cancelling out Josh Knight’s opener to go through and set up a meeting with Bolton.

Ferguson will now need to prepare for another season in League One and that means a return to the STōK Cae Ras is in the schedule.

Ferguson’s history at Wrexham

The Scot may be best known for being Sir Alex Ferguson’s son, but he is a fan favourite in his own right at Wrexham.

A midfielder in his playing days, Ferguson turned out for Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sparta Rotterdam before joining Wrexham in 1999.

Brian Flynn handed Ferguson non-contract terms at Wrexham, but the move ended up becoming a long stint.

Ferguson went on to spent eight years at Wrexham, experiencing two relegations and a promotion during his time at the club.

By the time Ferguson left the club, he had racked up more than 300 appearances for Wrexham whilst scoring over 50 goals.

Ferguson sits in the top 20 in terms of all-time appearance makers at Wrexham and we have little doubt that he will receive a great reception if he is still in charge of Peterborough when they travel to Wrexham.

Ferguson is surely looking forward to a return to Wrexham too, some 17 years since leaving the club and starting his Peterborough journey.
