'Honestly...': Steven Fletcher makes Wrexham dressing room admission following promotion

Wrexham striker Steven Fletcher only joined the club last summer but recent comments make it feel like he’s been a part of the fabric for a very long time.

Wrexham have put an offer on the table to give Steven Fletcher a new contract.

There was speculation hanging over his future at the STōK Cae Ras, as while he finished as the Reds’ third top scorer with eight goals, he did turn 37 in March.

The former Sunderland and Wolves striker has brought invaluable experience to the dressing room during a long and gruelling League Two campaign.

Alongside fellow teammate James McClean, who also arrived last year, the pair have left an unbelievable impact, with Phil Parkinson hailing the ‘professionalism’ of the duo.

In a promotion-winning team, experience is vital and luckily, Wrexham’s is laced with players who have flourished at a higher level.

Steven Fletcher claims Wrexham dressing room is ‘one of the best’

Most of Fletcher’s contributions this term have come from the bench, with the Scottish marksman starting just 10 times in League Two.

He’s proven himself to be a super sub in Wrexham colours, scoring in the 3-3 draw against Crewe Alexandra as a sub before striking against Salford and Morecambe.

It isn’t just on the pitch where the veteran forward has had his say, joining teammate Elliot Lee in claiming the dressing room is ‘one of the best’ he’s played in, despite being capped 33 times for Scotland and making 189 Premier League appearances.

Speaking to The Leader, Fletcher said: “I have really enjoyed this season, it has been fantastic.

“It has been great getting to play with the boys.

“It is an absolute great dressing room, one of the best I have been in. I know it is easy for me to say because of what we have done but on a personal level, the lads, the friendships and the bond I have made has been great.

“Honestly, you couldn’t have asked for a better changing room to come into, especially at this stage of my career. A few of the lads will be mates for life.”

Steven Fletcher can play a big part in League One

Fletcher’s comments about the dressing room suggest he will sign a new contract at Wrexham and continue his illustrious career in Wales.

Although he’s approaching a period where he’ll have to start thinking of retirement, the 37-year-old can still play a big part in League One.

Nobody will expect him to play most weeks, as seen in the fourth tier, but what he does bring – particularly to the younger players – is an invaluable experience of playing at the highest level.

After all, the clinical forward has netted 101 goals in the top two divisions of English football and not many, if any, at League One level boast that pedigree.

Fletcher has already claimed the Wrexham dressing room is ‘one of the best’, which is remarkable considering where he’s played his football previously, but that just shows what a special group of players Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have brought to the club.

It would be brilliant if Fletcher retired at Wrexham and enjoyed the club’s success for years to come.
