Report: Man Utd handed boost in £52m pursuit for one of 'the best' as club identify replacement

Manchester United’s centre-back department has been torn to shreds this season on and off the pitch, so it’s probably priority number one this summer.

Amid what has been a disappointing campaign for Manchester United, centre-back is where the biggest problems have stemmed from.

Erik ten Hag has barely been able to field anything resembling his first-choice backline this season with injuries to all his top defenders at one point or another.

The extent of this problem can be seen right now as only a half-fit Jonny Evans is available to select as a natural option at the back.

This has made the desire to recruit some quality centre-backs something that’s the priority this summer and now United have been handed a boost in the pursuit of one option.

Manchester United now handed boost in Gleison Bremer chase

With centre-half the undoubted priority this summer, one player who’s been consistently linked with a move to Old Trafford is Juventus’ Gleison Bremer.

The Brazilian seems a real target for Ineos to strengthen the centre-back position, and now there’s been a boost in the chase.

According to Tutto Mercato, Juventus have now decided on a replacement for Bremer as they’re expecting to sacrifice the £52m valued defender this summer.

The player they’re targeting is Bolonga’s Riccardo Calafiori who’s younger than Bremer and an exciting Italian defender.

He’d almost certainly be signed with the intention of Bremer departing which should please United and make a deal simpler to complete.

The report also specifically mentions that Bremer sits firmly in the crosshairs of Old Trafford chiefs. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has also admitted that this is a deal which is worth keeping an eye on.

Signing Bremer would be a gamechanger for United

Bremer is one of “the best” defenders in Europe right now and his addition to a backline which recently has included Casemiro, Evans and Willy Kambwala, would be a game-changer.

A proper defender who is in his prime and levels above the current options United have in defence, with Lisandro Martinez not having shown his quality in a long time.

He’s strong, fast and technically excellent which is practically every key strength a defender needs in this day and age.

Assuming United sign two centre-backs this summer, Bremer would be a sublime choice as the more experienced instant starter.

Adding a Bremer would be a real statement of intent by Ineos in the first summer of the new era.
