Report: Sheffield Wednesday facing Ian Poveda competition with Championship club among suitors

Sheffield Wednesday are now facing competition to sign Ian Poveda this summer.

Poveda, 24, is set to become a free agent this summer, upon the expiry of his current Leeds United contract.

Sheffield Wednesday are already reported to be desperate to re-sign Poveda this summer following his impressive spell on loan with the club.

He joined on loan on deadline day of the winter transfer window, going on to play 10 times in the Championship, with one assist.

Although Poveda failed to score for the Owls, his overall contribution to attacking plays and the energy of the side was undeniable, and summed up by the fact that Sheffield Wednesday won six of the eight games he started for the club.

But Poveda is now attracting interest from elsewhere.

Sunderland join race to sign Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday are not alone in their admiration of Poveda, with Championship rivals Sunderland apparently keen on the Colombian international.

An emerging report from Spanish language website Diario AS says that Sunderland, as well as Luton Town and Burnley are keen to rival Sheffield Wednesday for the signing of Poveda this summer.

Previous suggestions were that Poveda would be released by Leeds this summer, regardless of whether or not the Whites earn promotion to the Premier League.

Both Burnley and Luton Town are facing relegation to the Championship ahead of next season.

One man who can bring Ian Poveda to Sheffield Wednesday

Poveda certainly enjoyed a bit of a career upturn with Sheffield Wednesday.

With Leeds, he could never really get a run of games to show his class, and then in loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool, he was either hampered by injury or playing in a negative team.

With Wednesday though, playing under Danny Rohl, Poveda really shone; he was lively and given freedom to burst forward and take on players which he wasn’t really given by some of his other recent managers.

The Sheffield Wednesday fans quickly grew to love Poveda and if he had been fit for the final few games of the season, then the Owls might have secured safety a lot sooner.

And with Poveda having done so well under Rohl, the Leeds man may be keen for that to continue, as there’s no guarantee about game time at another club, or that his next manager gives him the same kind of freedom that Rohl did.

So Sheffield Wednesday may yet have the first say on Poveda this summer, and if he re-signs then it’ll be a very good deal for the Owls.
