'The club is expected to fund itself...': Gary O'Neil provides update on Wolves' transfer strategy with a big name likely to leave

Gary O’Neil has updated fans on what to expect from Wolves in the upcoming transfer window with a big name likely to leave.

Now that the 2023/24 campaign is coming to an end, all eyes have turned towards the summer window.

Much of Wolves’ issues in 2024 have derived from the club’s lack of depth which has seen their season collapse.

As a result, many of the Molineux faithful were hoping for a big window from the club to address many of these issues.

Ahead of the Crystal Palace fixture, O’Neil was able to give an update on what level of investment he expected from Wolves’ owners. However, the answer is likely to frustrate fans.

For many Wolves fans, Friday’s press conference will feel like Groundhog Day yet again. With the summer transfer window approaching, it seems like a vital moment for the club to finally address many of its reoccurring issues throughout the past few seasons.

After selling a big portion of the Wolves first-team last summer, many had hoped that the situation would have changed ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

However, O’Neil confirmed in his recent press conference that Wolves may need to ‘sell a big name to buy’ yet again with a spending spree not expected.

The Wolves manager said: “I don’t think there will be money available to us if nobody leaves so, if we decided not to sell a big player, then there is maybe some little bits or pieces we can do.

“There are some players out on loan that have value as well that we might be able to do some bits with. The club is expected in the foreseeable future to be able to fund itself, so we need to be able to work with what we have, whether we can move things out and improve it by bringing things in.

“Of course, these things can change, so I’m not committing to either way really. I wouldn’t expect it to be a summer where we spend millions and millions of the club’s own money on players.

“It won’t be the same as last year where we had to sell loads and make a huge profit but I wouldn’t expect it to be a spending spree.”

Another frustrating summer is coming Wolves’ way

Last summer, the club was a complete shambles. Numerous big names left throughout the summer including manager Julen Lopetegui due to Wolves’ financial situation.

It had previously been stated by Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi last year that he expected the club to be ‘more financially free’ for the next summer transfer window.

However, recent news will have largely disappointed the Molineux faithful after enduring a terrible summer last year.

If there is any inkling that Wolves fans will be forced through another window without any major incomings, the supporters will not be pleased.

More depth is clearly needed, and by selling more players strikes the fear that this may not happen.

A new defender, striker and winger is needed at a minimum this summer before any departures have been made.

Hopefully, in the coming weeks, the situation will be made more clear on how Wolves will operate in the market.
