NASCAR Paint Schemes of the Week: Darlington Throwback Weekend

NASCAR Throwback Weekend at Darlington is here. The Goodyear 400 is full of fun paint schemes paying homage to the near and distant past. Not everyone is participating in the festivities but the ones who are have done a heck of a job with the designs.

It takes teams and sponsors to come together for a successful throwback paint scheme. Sometimes you have to alter a logo or change a color around to make something work the way it is supposed to. This year a few teams went above and beyond.

The Hendrick Motorsports group all have great throwbacks. It is the 40th anniversary of the team so they are looking back at some of their most iconic looks from the past. It’s a lot of fun just to look at them and reminisce about the past.

Ross Chastain No. 1 Busch Light Chevy

The classic Busch Light design and can – it’s just too good not to like. The Trackhouse Racing version of the Busch Light sponsorship has been awesome so far this year.

Ross Chastain is a great driver for this brand. This car is one of my favorites of the season, let alone NASCAR Throwback Weekend. 9.5/10.

Kyle Larson No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevy

From a throwback standpoint, the No. 5 car gets a 100%. The colors, design, script – it’s all there. This Terry Labonte throwback is badass and will look so good on the track.

Kyle Larson just won the closest NASCAR Cup Series race in history last week at Kansas. He’s back to win at Darlington now in this epic throwback design. 10/10.

Brad Keselowski No. 6 Castrol Ford

Brad Keselowski might not have the flashiest throwback scheme but it might be the cleanest. A great throwback to one of Castrol’s most famous touring cars, real race heads will love this TOM’s Supra GT design.

There isn’t a bad car on this list and I’m afraid that this Castrol scheme is going to be overlooked this weekend. So, I’m giving it the credit it is due. 9.5/10.

Chase Elliott No. 9 UniFirst Chevy

Now, how can you be mad at this? Chase Elliott running a Dale Jr. throwback? The UniFirst car looks as close to the National Guard car as you can get.

I love the story but it’s not really my favorite scheme of all-time. Execution on this one is top notch though. 8.5/10.

Harrison Burton No. 21 Dex Imaging Ford

I didn’t expect to see Harrison Burton rocking such a cool throwback, but this is awesome. Glenn Wood on the door, “Leonard Wood Special” on the name rail. Just a great-looking car.

Dex Imaging has been awesome and open about changing things up a bit on weekends like this. A fun and interesting NASCAR Throwback Weekend design that older fans will like a lot. The dirt is a nice tough. 8/10.

William Byron No. 24 Axalta Chevy

Who doesn’t love flames? This Jeff Gordon throwback is fitting for the kind of season that William Byron is having this year. It’s not a complete recreation like his other teammates’ cars though.

Car looks great, but it isn’t a great match for the car it is supposed to be representing. Unfortunately, it is thebiggest letdown in the Hendrick group this weekend. 8/10.

Michael McDowell No. 34 Long John Silver’s Ford

Front Row Motorsports really got into the spirit of NASCAR Throwback Weekend. This Long John Silver’s design is fun if nothing else.

Having the old pirate on the side of the car is fun and makes for a good paint scheme. The number font is also a nice touch to bring this one together. 8/10.

Tyler Reddick No. 45 MoneyLion Toyota

A little Tim Richmond deep cut? How about that? Tyler Reddick is showing off with this design. A little known scheme Richmond ran, and failed to qualify, for the 1982 Daytona 500.

Reddick hopes to have more success in this scheme than Richmond had back in the day. Classic, simple, really awesome. 9/10.

Daniel Suárez No. 99 Quaker State Chevy

Trackhouse Racing is great at these paint schemes. Quaker State is also really great with participating in the throwback stuff.

Daniel Suárez has that Atlanta win tucked away. He’s had some trouble since then on the track, but is hoping to get things back going the right way this week at Darlington. 9/10.
