Top U.S., Chinese climate diplomats agree to promote cooperation

The top U.S. and Chinese climate diplomats held talks this week and confirmed bilateral cooperation in reducing greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, such as methane emitted from fossil fuel production, the State Department said Friday.

John Podesta, senior advisor to President Joe Biden for global climate policy, and his Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin co-led two days of working group discussions through Thursday in Washington.

The two sides discussed how to cooperate toward a successful U.N. climate change summit in Azerbaijan in November and agreed to deepen technical and policy exchanges for the transition to clean energy, according to the department.

Earlier this year, Podesta and Liu were appointed as the top climate envoys of the world's two largest emitters of greenhouse gases.

The United States and China clash bitterly on various issues, but climate change is one of the few areas in which the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation.
